Movement Alienation

THE WHAT: The concept of ‘Movement alienation’ encourages us to take a step back & consider how & what we engage with in terms of our physical practice. It also proposes that we can be more connected with & aware of how we are moving at any time – to truly experience being “in & of movement” – also in our daily lives, but particularly when engaging with its active & conscious practice.

Whilst it is ultimately a matter of perspective (those who are capable can bring this mindset to anything), it is also one of CONDITION. Baking bread can be my CRAFT, happily waking at the early hours to commence my fruitful labour. But if my conditions are a factory-line and my job is simply to set a dial on a machine to knead the mix, I am immediately ‘alienated’ from the product of my movement.

The Baker treasures the moment to see the crack appear atop the rising dough.

The factory-line worker awaits the ding of the bell when the mindless monotony can end.

In many ways, this is the difference between physical ‘Practice’ and ‘Exercise’. In practice I have the objective of learning more, and ultimately improving. If I consistently work with this objective underlying & guiding my action, I bring awareness to my every movement – I BECOME it, AM it – to ensure that I extract the most information possible to work with & develop. In order to analyse & reflect, I have to BE there to have something to analyse & reflect on.

The perspective of ‘exercise’, however, is that “I do this to get something DIFFERENT”, something ABSTRACTED from the action in & of itself. I push & pull… to build muscle. I swim and ride… to lose fat. I jog and run… to improve my “cardio”. In this way, the experience of HOW we are moving and precisely WHAT we are pouring our energy into becomes relegated to something… “necessary”. We might “exercise” and “train” for years & decades, and yet always be ‘alienated’ from what it is we are actually doing.

Why is this important? Because after much time of simply doing without thinking of the consequence, we wake up one day and realise that we have been shitting in our own beds, that what we have been doing has ultimately brought more RESTRICTION, rather than FREEDOM. This can take the form of injury, dissolution, feelings of monotony, and, at worst, complete indifference to moving. We have poured years worth of energy into a promise which cannot and will not be fulfilled. The hole that we though we were filling, is still there.

So – ask yourself the question: “Am I suffering from movement Alienation”? Answering “yes” is nothing of a shame, but an enlightening revelation – an opportunity! Your journey begins HERE.
