A Better Snatch Progression

Brandon Chien

Overhead Squats will not teach you how to “get under the bar faster”. Here’s why:

1. At no point in a Snatch will the bar be so high, that you’ll start from an Overhead Squat position.
2. It will not expose you to how FAST you need to get into the final position.

Here’s what to do instead. This is guaranteed to get you under the bar FASTER in under 15-minutes:

Overhead Squat + Leans > 3-level Snatch Balance > Tall Snatch

1.Overhead Squat Leans: Learn the right amount of lean to stay balanced in a static position, at each level you might catch the barbell at, not scary.

2. 3-level Snatch Balances: Learn how to dynamically catch at different heights, somewhat scary.

3. Tall Snatches: Learn to transition from full extension to full squat, more scary.

4. Highlights of my weightlifting class working on the “scaries” of Snatch Balances.

Each step allows you to challenge yourself without threatening your brain so you get overwhelmed. See my post earlier about the Safety/Challenge/Threat triad – this is a perfect example of how it applies to weightlifting skills.
